Did you know that 80% of people will experience low back pain at some stage in their life? and 80% of these people will also go on to have further episodes in the future.

The trick to managing low back pain (most common back pain) is to not only prevent future occurrences through understanding the cause and engaging in appropriate prevention exercise, but also to know what to do if it does flare up again.

It is important for those with any type of back pain to realise that it manifests differently in every person. It is therefore very important to seek your own assessment to pinpoint the direct cause of your pain and ensure that the most effective treatment is provided.

Physiotherapists are experts in the musculoskeletal system, and in particular the spine, having undergone a high level of training in the management of back pain.

Signs and symptoms:

Lower back pain can be described as:

  • Insidious (comes on slowly with no specific incident) or acute (definite injury mechanism)
  • Intermittent (comes and goes) or constant pain
  • A localised sharp pain or generalised dull ache

It can also be associated with:

  • Pain that also spreads to the hips, groin, buttocks, legs and/or feet
  • Pins and needles and/or numbness in the legs or feet
  • A weakness in the leg muscles – e.g. seen by difficulty getting out of a chair or climbing stairs
  • A pain associated with bowel and/or bladder changes, perhaps with change in frequency and control
  • An aggravation of pain with prolonged sitting (>20mins), bending forwards, standing and/or walking

Causes:

Low back pain can be caused by many factors, including:

  • Trauma – e.g. fall, car accident, lifting
  • Muscle imbalances – postural issues
  • Existing medical conditions
  • Rheumatological conditions – e.g. arthritis

Low back pain can also be caused by a build up of stress on the back that gradually turns into an injury.
