Celebrate as one this NAIDOC Week
Join us to celebrate Ipswich NAIDOC 2014 Family and Cultural Celebration. This Thursday, 10th July at Briggs Road Sports Club, Artius will be exchanging information on how we can help people reach their potential.
Identified as one of the most significant events in Australia, NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Artius’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Manager, Barry Fewquandie says, “NAIDOC week is important to all indigenous people for many reasons. It celebrates our culture, recognises our history and what people have done in the past. It is also a celebration of special events and brings together indigenous and non-indigenous people”.
To increase awareness and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage, each year NAIDOC week represents a different theme. 2014 highlights: Serving Country: Century & Beyond. The theme honours Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have fought in defence for this country.
“This theme is very significant because there has been very limited documentation on the men and women who served in the military service and only in recent years have people who fought in past wars been nationally identified” says Barry.
Artius provides health, employment, community and training services to all communities and recognises the importance of supporting the Closing the Gap initiative. Artius has many programs in place to support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to access these services.
“One of my main goals at Artius is to build a bridge between service providers and indigenous communities especially in the health, disability employment and training sectors”, says Barry.
