Is Your Headache a Real Pain In The Neck

By Paul Stokes, Physiotherapist

Headaches are often caused by physical or emotional tension. This tension often leads to the muscles and joints of the neck tightening up. If this goes on for too long it can cause a real 'pain in the neck', but also may refer pain into the head causing a headache. For many people headaches start as pain or tension in the neck.  As the pain worsens, it may spread to the back of the head, the temples, forehead, or behind the yes.  Moving the neck or bending forward for a long time tends to make it worse.

This happens because the nerves in the upper part of your neck are connected to the nerves in your head and face. So problems with the upper neck muscles can cause referred pain to your head.

Any of the following points could suggest that your neck may be causing your headache:

·         Does the pain radiate from the back to the front of the head

·         Your headache is associated with light headedness or dizziness

·         Headache is made worse by neck movement or staying in the same position for a long time

·         Headache which always feels worse on the same side of your head

·         Headache eased with pressure to the base of the skull

·         Headache that persists after your doctor has checked for other causes

My top 10 tips for preventing tension headaches and referred pain from the neck:

1.       Sit up properly and arrange your work station to best suit your height and shape

2.       Be mindful of your head posture when you are talking on the phone, relaxing in front of the TV, sitting for long periods, or reading for long periods

3.       Stand up every 45 mins – 1 hour to stretch your neck and spine

4.       Do something active (eg walk) for at least 30 minutes per day

5.       If pain starts, try a hot pack to the base of the neck

6.       Include some simple neck strengthening and  mobility exercises as part of your daily routine

7.       Include a regular massage in your routine (weekly or monthly) to prevent tension developing

8.       Take some time out each day just to relax and do something that makes you feel good (can be as little as 5 minutes)

9.       Get your physiotherapist to check your pillow and sleeping position to ensure proper spinal alignment

10.   Get on top of niggly aches and pains quickly before they develop into full blown headaches, see your physiotherapist
