National Nutrition Week is here so what better time to take the first steps towards a healthier you.
Getting into the habit of ‘good eating’ is tricky business,. Following are some simple tips to help you get going.
- Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner daily
Regular meals help to keep your energy levels stable and make sure your metabolism is working at an optimal level
- Avoid the fats
Choose low fat products where possible. Use only a scrape of butter or margarine and use spray oil in your cooking.
- Don’t drink your calories
Limit soft drinks, cordials, juices, high fat milk drinks and alcohol.
- Fill up on fibre
Choose high fibre foods such as whole grain breads, cereals and crackers, fruit and vegetables. These fill you up and leave you feeling satisfied
- Portions, portions, portions
Many of us overeat at our evening meal. Try piling half your plate with vegetables and salad, only a quarter of your plate with protein (meat, chicken, fish or vegetarian alternative) and only a quarter of you plate with carbohydrates (pasta, rice, potato, sweet potato or corn).
- Keep a food diary
Keeping a record of everything you eat for a week or two can often make you aware of what you are getting right and what you are getting wrong. It is a great way to self-monitor.
- Enjoy your food!
Allow yourself to sit down, without distractions, and savour you meal. You will see how much satisfaction you can get from only 2 small pieces of chocolate without having to eat the whole block!
- Be more active every day
Turn the TV off and go for a walk around the block, take the stairs or walk to the shops. You can also invest in a pedometer and count the number of steps you take each day, gradually increasing your target.
