Neck Pain

Neck pain is extremely common and can affect your life in many ways. It can present itself as sharp neck pain, dull muscular aches, headaches and/or an inability to fully move your neck, all of which can be extremely frustrating.

The good news is that neck pain can be surprisingly easy to fix with physiotherapy in a majority of cases. To enable this it is important that a full and accurate assessment is completed so that appropriate treatment can be directed at the cause.

Signs and symptoms:

We commonly find that the joints within the cervical spine (neck) become stiff or locked, often due to poor posture, which then causes a protective spasm of some of your neck and shoulder muscles and weakness in others. This subsequently causes further alteration of your neck posture, which causes the condition to deteriorate further.

Unfortunately we find that one stiff neck joint or weak/tight muscle can have a dramatic effect if not fixed quickly. We also find that the longer there is abnormality, the harder it is to reverse. It is therefore important that if you have neck pain, you seek treatment early.

In addition to joint and muscles there are also many other causes of neck pain, including:

  • Wry neck
  • Bulging disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Arthritis
  • Scoliosis
  • Facet joint dysfunction/pain
  • “Pinched nerve”

How can I prevent neck pain?

While there are no guarantees, we do know that people who are active and participate in regular exercise to maintain their flexibility and muscle strength have the best chance of avoiding neck pain.

Following good ergonomic advice is important to ensure that you are preventing poor neck posture, muscle imbalances and excessive stress through neck structures. An Artius physiotherapist is able to guide you in finding your ideal posture and advise you on the best ergonomic set up for your workstation. They can also provide you with a preventative exercise program to build your strength and postural stability to prevent neck pain.

I have neck pain - what's the next step?

Seek assessment and treatment with an Artius Physiotherapist!

Physiotherapists are highly skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical neck pain, and we have moved away from the old days of having to “crack a joint” to “fix it”. Even chiropractors are starting to promote more gentle techniques that physiotherapists have offered as part of their neck treatment protocols for decades.

Your Artius Physiotherapist will spend the time to perform a full examination to ensure that they have a full and clear understanding of the underlying cause of your neck pain. This assessment may include:

  • Your posture
  • Your active and/or passive range of motion
  • Muscle tone and joint mobility through palpation of your neck
  • Nerve mobility
  • Muscle strength
  • Sensation assessment

We are very passionate about ensuring that the treatment we provide aligns with the most recent evidence available so that you get the best outcome for your neck. From this evidence we know that a combination of neck joint and muscle treatment performed by your Physiotherapist and specific strengthening exercises are an effective way to eliminate neck pain, stiffness and headaches. The good news is that if you do this early, you can significantly reduce your chances of neck pain returning.
